Sleeping and settling infants

All babies have the ability to settle and be good sleepers, if they're given the opportunity to learn. It's the personalities of babies and parents that needs to be respected, and they should be guided with different methods to suit each individual. Most babies need a certain amount of sleep to cope with the immense amount of stimulation and growth in their young life. Sleep is of the utmost importance - not only for the baby, but also for the parents - many of whom have little 24hr guidance or support. Learn some basic ideas on calming an unsettled baby as Sharlene shares her experiences and helps solve common problems.

Conscious infant massage and sensory development

Other than smell, tactile sense is the first way that a baby interacts with this unfamiliar world. Tactile stimulation carries massive amounts of information to a baby's developing brain and facilitates neuro-sensory-motor development, emotional and will development, as well as social development. It's also the beginning of the crucial 'parent-child bonding'. Learning infant massage is important not only for a child, but for parents too. Because Kitty understands the stress (and of course your joy) of being a new mother or father, she believes sharing this knowledge of sensory development in a baby's growth will help parents of all young children.

Growing successful children

“The world around us is rushing too quickly. Despite our best intentions, our expectations of children have consequently increased to the extent where our view of childhood has shifted considerably and not necessarily for the better.” - Kathy Walker. We all want our children to do well in life, but how do we teach them to be happy and successful in today’s busy world?

Winding and digestion support for newborn babies

There are simple techniques and practices parents can learn to help them cope with babies and their trouble with wind. Most babies suffer or struggle with some sort of digestion discomfort or wind pain and they rely on their parents to help them adapt to the new way of eating and digesting, sleeping and playing. The snowball effects of wind is what Sharlene believes contributes to the diagnosis of ‘colic’ and unsettled periods of the day commonly stated as being ‘normal’ newborn behaviour or ‘witching hours’. Adapting some of Sharlene's simple techniques to a newborn baby's daily pattern can bring more calm and happiness to a 24hr day - that can at times be very challenging for all!

Can we teach health to small children?

The formation of health-related knowledge begins in the infant, toddler, and preschool years. Health may sound like a dry topic to teach, but with a little creativity it can be enjoyable for children of any age. Instead of giving lectures about healthful eating we can use activities that kids will enjoy, such as reading and games. If we can make children excited about being healthy from a young age, they'll be on their way to becoming healthy adults.
