ECOBABe: The University Of Auckland

Interested in your baby’s gut microbiome? We need pregnant women in Auckland who are planning to give birth vaginally or by elective c-section to join the ECOBABe study.
The ECOBABe study at the Liggins Institute is investigating if giving babies born by c-section bacteria from their mother’s vagina shortly after birth can help establish healthy gut bacteria.
There is growing evidence linking c-sections to an increased risk of babies later developing obesity and immune disorders, like asthma and diabetes.
It is possible that c-sections disrupt the normal process of bacterial colonisation and that affects the development of babies metabolic and immune systems.
We will collect poo samples from all babies so that we can analyse their gut bacteria. All results will be available to participants at the end of the study. Meet us at the Baby Show to see some sample results and have a chat about participating. You can also check out the Liggins Institute website for more study information.
